Establishing a morning routine is crucial not only to your productivity but also to your overall wellbeing and health.
In order to successfully create a morning routine for yourself, you need to get enough sleep. I have always considered myself a morning person, but for many, waking up early is extremely difficult. But, if you think you’re a night owl, think again. I assure you this: you might actually enjoy the morning if you had a morning routine that you love! In order to get to bed earlier, unplug an hour before bed and try winding down an hour earlier than usual. You’ll be glad when you’ve gotten more than 6 or 7 hours of sleep.
When you feel well-rested, you’ll have the energy to perform a morning routine. But at this point, you might be wondering what types of things you should be doing in the morning. What exactly you’ll want to do for your morning is, luckily, your choice. For the first few days or weeks, you will be in a trial-and-error phase. See what works for you. Ask yourself, “What makes me feel good in the morning?” Or, “What do I need to do in order to be productive today?”
Here are a few ideas if you’re ever feeling stuck.
Move Your Body
If you love to exercise and hitting the gym or a workout class is already a part of your daily routine, try starting your morning with a short workout. Or, if you’re not the athletic-type, try doing a couple of ab crunches just to get your blood pumping. If none of those spark your interest, I recommend trying some light stretching. Stretching is a great way to start the day, because it helps you to feel limber. If you need help on what stretches to perform, there are tons of stretching apps!
Yeah, yeah, you’ve heard it before. Meditation is key to living the life you’ve always dreamed about. Meditation teaches us how to breathe and to stay focused on the present moment. Meditating soon after you wake up each morning will clear your mind for the day and will ensure that you have the focus necessary for a productive day. Just like stretching, there a several apps that are dedicated to helping users learn the art of meditation. Personally, I love the Headspace app.
You might not feel thirsty when you wake up from a good night’s sleep. But, it’s super important to hydrate yourself right away. Maybe you love a cold glass of water – or maybe you prefer a warm glass of water with lemon. Either way, it’s important to hydrate, as hydration starts your metabolism for the day and it wakes you up.
This one sounds silly, I’m sure, but it’s important that you get dressed when you wake up. Get out of your pajamas and change into different clothes. Even if you’ll be home all day, it’s important to change into ‘actual’ clothes, because what we wear directly influences our mindset for the entire day. If you’re in your pajamas, you’ll be more inclined to have a lazy day. If you are in your favorite pair of workout leggings or jeans, you’ll be ready to get things done.
